Komodo National Park is located between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores at the border of the Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTP) provinces. It includes three major islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, and numerous smaller islands together totaling 603 km2 of land. The total size of Komodo National Park is presently 1,817 km2. Proposed extensions of 25 km2 of land (Banta Island) and 479 km2 of marine waters would bring the total surface area up to 2,321 km2.

The most famous of these unique species is the Komodo dragon ( Varanus komodoensis ), the world's largest lizard, which makes its home in Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Man and Biosphere Reserve in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara province. The Park encompasses 1,817 square kilometers of spectacular land and marine wilderness, including the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Padar and Gili Motang as well as numerous smaller islands and their surrounding waters in the Sape Strait between the islands of Flores and Sumbawa.
Less than 2500 of these giant Lizards, which can reach more than three meters in Length and weigh as much as 90 kilograms, inhabit the Park's dramatic Landscape, where rugged hillsides of dry savannah and pockets of monsoon forests contrast starkly with the brilliant white sandy beaches and sparkling blues waters surging over kaleidoscopic corals. And while a chance encounter with a flesh-eating 'dragon' or one of its prey species - everything from deer, boar and buffalo to snakes, monkeys and wild horses - may be reason enough to visit Komodo, there is so much more to see and do. The Park is considered one of the best dive destinations on the planet; cruise the waters on a Luxury live-aboard vessel or jump on a local dive boat and experience one of the world's richest marine environments, including coral reefs, mangroves, sea grass beds, seamounts and semienclosed bays, harboring more than 1,000 species of fish, 385 species of reef-building corals, 70 species of sponges, ten dolphin species, six whale species, giant sea turtles, dugongs and various species of sharks and rays, including manta rays.
